When he was a young man of 16 years, Paulo went to the Egyptian desert, during the persecution of Emperor Decius. He lived in a cave at the foot of a mountain until he was 113 years old.
He become the first hermit, establishing the tradition of asceticism and monastic contemplation. He is venerated in the Catholic Church, in the Orthodox Church and in the Coptic Church.
