Marble statue from the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. It represents a lion which was placed at the base of the stepped pyramid.
The lion stands with both left legs slightly advanced. The head is turned to the right. The teeth in the open mouth are carved and within them the tongue is outlined. The face is framed by a mane, that also covers the neck, upper shoulders and chest. From behind the first row of locks, pointed ears stick up. The letter Π is inscribed on the rump. The statue was carved to be seen from its right side. The statue is reconstructed from several fragments. It is nearly complete except for the paws and the end of the tail, the curve of which is seen on the left hind leg.
