Hand-carved stave from a Sicilian wedding cart with the head of a man carved into the top. These carts were introduced to the island by the ancient Greeks. The craft of making 'caretti' (carts) is handed down from generation to generation, through the training of apprentices. These caretti are known for elaborate, brightly painted carvings with scenes from Sicilian history and folklore, accompanied by intricate geometrical designs.
