This engine’s success came from its ability to unite power and speed, as well its economical operation and ease of use for drivers and firemen. Created in the 1930s as a transformation of the Gr 680, it was used on all main lines, starting from the Rome-Naples route, to pull fast trains. The novelty of this train compared to the previous 680 group was its superheater, which used heat from the boiler to heat the steam, providing more power. The 685 went out of service in 1968. The letter "s" in front of the locomotive’s name stands for "Special.” It indicates a design modification by engineer Caprotti of the system that distributed steam through the cylinders.
