Steam Locomotive CP 003

Société John Cockerill

National Railway Museum

National Railway Museum
Entroncamento, Portugal

Steam locomotive built in Belgium during 1890 by Société John Cockerill for the Royal Company of the Portuguese Railways. This locomotive and CP 004 from the same build, were an extension of the CP series 001 and 002, from 1882. CP 003 was allocated to Entroncamento and later in Contumil. Their small dimension, combined with robustness and maneuverability, meant this series of small locomotives was intended exclusively for the railway construction as well as shunting duties at stations and goods depots where they were allocated. As such, theses locomotives were therefore known as pilot locomotives and were the predecessors of the diesel shunters. Locomotives of this series were known as "mice".
