This ichthyosaur was found in the Posidonia Shale in Germany. This particular ichthyosaur mount contains two skeletons: and adult and an unborn infant. Unlike modern marine reptiles - which lay eggs - prehistoric marine reptiles gave birth to live young. This mother ichthyosaur died giving birth to her offspring, suggesting birth was dangerous for both individuals. The infant is being born tail first, so it wouldn't drown during the birthing process.
