In Sonneberg in 1959, after a development period of approximately a year, the German Democratic Republic's first pocket transistor radio, the "Sternchen," was released. It contained 6 germanium transistors and 2 diodes, which were also produced in the GDR. The radio was in high demand and was especially popular with young people. By the mid-1960s the components of the Sternchen were also available to buy individually. It was powered by the new 9 V block battery, but these weren’t long lasting.
