This replica of Steve Waugh’s famous ‘red hanky’ – which throughout his career he surreptitiously hung out of his pocket as a good luck charm – was produced by the Sydney newspaper The Daily Telegraph when Waugh announced his retirement following the 2003–04 IndiaAustralia Test series. Handed out free to all ticket holders at the match, the hankies were enthusiastically by the crowd, turning the grandstands into a sea of red.
