Puppeteer Jim Henson (1936-1990) created the characters we know as Muppets in the 1950, and these characters first appeared on television in 1955's "Sam and Friends." This program featured Henson's signature Muppet creation, Kermit the Frog. Kermit, and eventually other Muppet characters, went from late-night television appearances to hosting the long-lived children's television series "Sesame Street" beginning in 1969. Muppet characters and television and film projects earned Henson and his production companies multiple awards over the years, and have become some of the most recognized--and cherished--characters which entertain both children and adults.
