In a letter from the artist’s widow dated 1925, she remarks, “This Still Life was painted by my husband and is a very well painted canvas--and most interesting using his palettes.” In the work, inspired by European Old Masters, Chase depicts the tools of his craft: commercially produced tubes of paint, brushes, palette and a pounce-ball full of chalk used to prepare the surface of a painting.
