For almost forty years Heda executed still-life paintings in monochrome colours with an astonishing eye for detail. The two examples in the Hallwyl Collection are typical for his style and of his composition; glasses, beakers tazza-goblets, and different kinds of edibles lies apparently unorganized on a table – a chaos which is expertly directed, however. Willem Heda came to be a leading still life painter in Haarlem and influenced a great number of artist, amongst them his son and pupil, Gerrit. He and his son co-produced several works and it is often hard to tell them apart style-wise.
