The artists’ colony of Szolnok, an art centre fostering the realistic traditions of genre painting, was established in 1902. One of the decisive figures of the colony was Adolf Fényes, associated with the town for nealry four decades. In his period between 1897 and 1908 he painted his series Life of the Poor with deep commitment and empathy.
