Pont-Aven, France

Drawing inspiration from the 17th century Dutch painting tradition, Meijer de Haan produced many paintings of fruit and vegetables. In this sombre-toned work, the artist depicts a round blue pitcher. The red-and-yellow pears placed simply around it reflect the natural light, enlivening the composition. According to the survey of the collection of Ida Cochennec (daughter of the artist and of Marie Henry) made by artist Fernand Daucho (1898–1982), this work was one of the first produced by de Haan in Brittany.
