Meiffren Compte took his inspiration from the silver furniture of Louis XIV to compose this still life. This furniture was melted down in 1689, owing to the financial difficulties of the kingdom.
Provenance: This torch formed part of a series of twelve paintings illustrating the Labours of Hercules executed after the drawings of Charles Le Brun and intended for the king's Grand Appartement at Versailles.
