"Artur Carbonell (Sitges, 1906-1973) like Sunyer who was the nephew of the Sitges-born painter Joaquim de Miró, was born in Sitges in 1906. Although he started studying architecture, he soon gave up in order to become a painter. In the autumn of 1929 he went to Paris with Joaquim Sunyer to study. There he became acquainted with the avant-garde movement that predominated in Europe at that time and which would mark his subsequent artistic career in the field of painting and the theatre. He let himself be seduced by surrealism.
As regards his work in the theatre he was a director, scenographer and costume designer, as well as making the occasional appearance as an actor. In 1940 he was appointed as a teacher in the Institut del Teatre (Theatre Institute) where he taught scenography. In 1952 he became deputy director of the same institution, which later changed its name to the Higher School of Dramatic Art.2
