Countless 17th-century Dutch artists were still-life painters, but in Italy such specialists were few and far between. Baschenis of Bergamo was one of them and his cleverly painted arrangements of musical instruments were very popular. What is particularly remarkable about this picture is the name on the lute and the track someone has traced with a finger in the dust: a timeless joke.

- Artist Information: Evaristo Baschenis spent his whole life living and working in his birthplace Bergamo. He came from a family of painters, but originally set his mind on the priesthood. His still lifes showing musical instruments are unique in the 17th century. The detailing is reminiscent of Dutch still life painters of the same period, but the way the light falls shows the influence of Caravaggio.
