Audley End was built in the early 17th century on the site of the abbey of Walden. Pleasure grounds werecreaqted by Richard Woods, and between 1761 and 1767 Lancelot 'Capability' Brown designed and partially laid out a surrounding park.
The stone bridge to the south-west of Audley End House was designed by Robert Adam and built in 1763-4, and altered in 1784. It features a hump-back with balustrade and three segmental arches. The river was widened by Brown to form a sinuous lake.
