These stone points attached to the front of shafts were used before the bow worldwide as a hunting tool during the Paleolithic Period. From the end of the Paleolithic Period in Japan (approximately 16,500-35,000 years ago) until the incipient of the Jōmon Period (about 16,500-12,000 years ago), stone projectile points were used mainly in the Chūbu and Kantō regions. Projectile points were made by first breaking a stone so that small fragments could be taken off, and then the head of the stone was sharpened.
