Stone sculpture that represents a jaguar ML301346

This 3000 years old stone sculpture that represents a jaguar was found at Pacopampa, a temple in Cajamarca, northern highlands of Peru. Three thousand years ago, jaguars carved in stone as this one greeted the pilgrims in the plazas of some temples of ancient Peru. On its body we can distinguish some concentric circles that represent the spots of its coat. It is noteworthy that in the Andes jaguars are considered animals that come from the wetlands of the Amazon, which are behind the mountains to the east, a place from where the sun rises every morning. Sun and water are vital forces that sustain life on this earth, and are present in the symbolism of the jaguar. Therefore, the spots on its skin are also symbol of water. Since ancient times, and in different cultures, big felines were considered symbol of strength, fertility and cyclical transformation because they are animals that must take the lives of others to live. In the Andean region, jaguars and pumas are the largest carnivores, and since early times they have been represented in pre-Columbian art as powerful and meaningful personages of the Andean cosmovision. Esta escultura de piedra que representa un jaguar proviene del templo de Pacopampa, en la sierra norte del Perú. Tres mil años atrás, jaguares tallados en piedra como éste recibían a los peregrinos en las plazas de algunos templos del antiguo Perú. Sobre su cuerpo podemos distinguir algunos círculos concéntricos que representan las manchas de su pelaje. Es importante mencionar que los jaguares son para los pobladores andinos, animales que vienen de las tierras húmedas de la Amazonía, que están detrás de la montañas, hacia el este, lugar por donde aparece el sol cada mañana. Sol y agua son fuerzas vitales que permiten la vida en esta tierra, y se conjugan en la simbología del jaguar. Por ellos, las manchas sobre su dorada piel también son símbolo del agua, que viene desde el mundo superior a permitir la vida en esta tierra. Los seres humanos tenemos una relación especial con los grandes felinos. Desde tiempos antiguos, y en diferentes culturas, éstos fueron símbolo de fuerza vital, fertilidad y transformación cíclica, ya que son animales que deben tomar la vida de otros para seguir viviendo. En el área andina, los otorongos o jaguares y los pumas, son los carnívoros de mayor tamaño, y han sido desde épocas tempranas representados en el arte precolombino, ya que son personajes muy significativos de la cosmovisión andina.
