Stone Statuette of Heavenly King

Yangzhou Museum

Yangzhou Museum
Yangzhou, China

Unearthed in Xuzhuang, Balipu, Guazhou town, Hanjiang County of Yangzhou city in 1964, this stone statuette features an awe-inspiring Heavenly King who is in a wrathful expression with two wide-open eyes, a Vajra in hand and two demons under his feet. Thanks to the tensile and powerful bladework, the Heavenly King looks extremely vivid, serving as an important reference material for the study on the Buddhist culture and sculpting art of the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD).
