The Sandburgs purchased furniture for its function and quality construction. Stickley furniture reflected the Sandburgs' belief that beauty is in hard work and utilitarian simplicity. Sandburg once said of work, "Above all other privileges...I place the privilege of work. The brightest, most lasting happiness I know is that which comes from yearning, striving, struggling, fashioning, this way and that, till a thing is done...." Stickley furniture was handmade of natural materials, such as oak and leather for upholstery. It was varnished, not painted and was strong and simple. This furniture dominated design of the Arts and Crafts movement in the US in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
