Developed by Toys for Bob and released by Activision in 2011, Skylanders pioneered the toys-to-life category of video games. Initially released for the Wii, PlayStation 3, 3DS, and Wii U consoles, Skylanders introduced radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip technology into the video game market. In Skylanders players placed their monster figurines embedded with RFIDs onto portals that read the chips and displayed the player's virtual character on screen. The game franchise became a massive success, earning more than $3 billion in revenue while other companies such as Nintendo, LEGO, and Disney produced their own toys-to-life games.
