Oil painting on raw linen "Storm at Sunset" by Jon Madsen. Semi-abstract landscape depicting a heavy rain storm concentrated over the lights of a town (Laramie, Wyoming) with a silhouetted hill in the foreground and silhouetted mountain in the background. A wide, inverted triangle of brilliant orange serves as the sunset in the space between the silhouetted mountain and hill. A large patch of unpainted linen serves as the clear sky with a purple band across the top of the composition representing the storm clouds.
Jon Madsen was born in Kansas, grew up in Wyoming and made friends with the wind and open spaces. He attended college at the University of Wyoming BFA/MFA 1973 majoring in Art. Madsen then held a 25-year career in computers to support a family and his “painting habit”. From 1998 – 2007, he taught Beginning Drawing and Watercolor classes for the University of Wyoming Art Department.
