London, United Kingdom

FitzRoy developed a series of signals using canvas cones and drums. These indicated the direction a gale might be expected from, and were to be hoisted where they could be seen by shipping in port and around the coasts. If they remained in place after the wind had dropped it meant the improvement was only temporary. the signals saved many lives and remained in use until 1984.
