Landscape master, one of the best-known marine painters. Pupil of Hendrik Vroom (1562/63–1640). Worked in di erent cities – Rotterdam, London, Middelburg, Antwerp, Ghent, Haarlem, Amsterdam, Voorburg and Zoeterwoude-Dorp. Followed by many painters of the succeeding generation, including Jacob van Ruisdael (1628/29–1682), Salomon van Ruysdael (1600/03–1670), Jan van de Cappelle (1626–1679), Jan van Goyen (1596–1656) and others. The wind driven clouds reflected in the sea spread over almost the whole of the painting. We see a low horizon and the wide distance, boats with wind filled sails and the mighty sea, somewhat rough but at the same time beautiful in its silvery greyishness.
