The extreme poverty experienced by many Indonesians had also touched the hearts of several educated individuals who consequently strived to improve the dignity of the nation. Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo’s attempt at setting up a scholarship fund failed to achieve the desired results. However the noble aspiration contained within his efforts had stirred the spirit of the students of STOVIA (School Tot Opleiding Van Indische Artsen), The Medical School for the Natives) in Jakarta. On May 8, 1908, the students founded the Budi Utomo.The students ofSTOVIA had played a monumental role in the development of the modern Indonesian National Movement.
