In conversation, the wily French statesman Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand dubbed this mansion a palace, and so it has since been called. The forecourt shown here was built on a substantial vault connected to the tops of the old ramparts of the city of Geneva, which now owns the house. Jean-Gabriel Eynard made this sharply angled study of the street front of his residence from the steps of a nearby building.
