From the Late Roman period onwards, both Roman and ‘native’ women wore long necklaces made of beads. These remained popular in the Middle Ages. This explains why they are found so frequently – especially strings of beads from the Merovingian period. In diverse women’s graves, several bead necklaces have been found.
