In 1896, the professor of composition at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Henry Thouron, invited several advanced and former students to decorate the lecture hall with murals illustrating allegorical figures of the arts and muses. This was one of the studies Sloan produced for the commission. The completed mural, Dramatic Music, is in the Academy's collection.
