Study for Portrait of John McClure Hamilton

This oil study for a larger portrait at the Wadsworth Atheneum shows one of Eakins's students at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, John McClure Hamilton, also a portrait painter. Eakins made brief studies like this one before creating his full-scale paintings but worked from life for the latter. The studies served as reference for pose, dress, and compositional boundaries.
