This work served as a study focusing on the way creases form in heavy, classically-draped garments, when the wearer is engaged in contrapposto movement. Giorgio Vasari, who put together a collection of similar studies in a book entitled Libro de’Disegni, offers an accurate appraisal of Filippino, whom he described in comments written in 1568 as the first artist ‘who showed the moderns the new method of giving variety to vestments, and embellished and adorned his figures with the girt-up garments of antiquity’.
