The Atlantic sturgeon is a strange, greenish-brown fish with a slightly upturned snout. Along the length of the fish, there is a kind of harness of big bony platelets.Sturgeon usually live in coastal waters, but in the mating season they swim into rivers to lay their eggs. Sometimes sturgeon swim over 1000 km upstream to mate. This fish used to be very common in Dutch rivers too. After the 1950s, however, it became very rare due to overfishing, a decline in mating places and barriers in the rivers.
