This scroll contains a story which describes the origin of the folding fan (扇子), using texts and colourful illustrations. The title can be translated as 'The unfolding of a fan'. The story itself dates to the Muromachi 室町 period (1393-1573) and the scroll seems to have been made in the latter half of the 17th Century. The illustrations were probably done by artists of the Tosa School of Painting (土佐派). The genre to which this scroll belongs is known as Nara emaki 奈良絵巻 (painted scrolls of Nara).
