Suffering Christ

Swabian Workshop (?)16th Century

Museo Diocesano Tridentino

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento, Italy

The small sculpture, intended for private devotion, shows Christ suffering after the Crucifixion. This iconography differs from the similar iconography of the Ecce Homo (Jesus flagellated) by the fact that the Christ also has wounds in his hands, feet, and side.
This depiction of the “Suffering Man” was meant to inspire compassion in the observer, making him aware of the human suffering of the Passion of Jesus.
