Suffragettes including Lillian Williamson, Mary Gawthorpe, Helen Tolson and Annie Rose campaigning at Manchester Docks, 13 December, 1908. In 1908 Mary Gawthorpe was sent to Manchester to implement a decision by the WSPU leadership to organise large meetings in principal cities. This policy was a direct result of the success of the June 1908 Hyde Park Demonstration that had resulted in considerable public and media interest in the campaign throughout the UK. Mary remained Chief WSPU Organiser in Lancashire until ill-health forced her to retire in September 1910.
