Mrs. Walker often entertained friends, colleagues, and other dignitaries and she kept an impressive collection of silver, crystal and porcelain serving pieces to accommodate formal gatherings. This domed sugar bowl contains slots for twelve demitasse spoons. Not all of these silver spoons are from the same set, however. In fact, the spoon visible on the far right is a souvenir from the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo New York. This was the World's Fair that witnessed the assassination of President McKinley and his succession by Theodore Roosevelt - a progressive president embraced by the African American community in Richmond and elsewhere.
