Large-scale farms or ‘plantations’ spread across the landscape. Each required a resident labour force, a crushing mill and wharf for transporting raw sugar to Dungeness, the little port at the mouth of the Herbert River. Gairloch opened the first mill in 1872 followed by Macknade, Bemerside, Hamleigh and Victoria.
