Each person was allowed to take two suitcases, two blankets, and a second pair of shoes on their journey to death. The luggage had to be marked in white oil paint – like this suitcase from Frieda Jacobowitz. She was deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt in 1942 and killed in Auschwitz in 1944. Her suitcase remained in Theresienstadt. In 1945 Dr. Arthur Stoehr used it to bring his last belongings back to Vienna. He had survived Theresienstadt, unlike his wife Josefa. A relative of Dr. Stoehr discovered the suitcase decades later in the attic.
