A white fox is sitting under moonflowers on a warm summer evening. The picture is humid, intimating that this scene takes place after an evening shower. The combination of moonflowers and the fox is exquisite. Their whiteness glimmers in the darkness and it reeks of the coolness of summer. The flowers are soft and cottony, and the fox is cool and clear. Kansetsu began painting animals in the Showa era. This painting is an outstanding example amongst his works. The complex look of the white fox illustrates the maturity of Kansetsu’s work. This work was displayed in the fourth New Bunten Exhibition.
