This little painting belongs with a small winter landscape also painted by Christoffel van den Berghe. Here, the focus is on summertime: the trees are in leaf, the ducks are swimming in the water and people are taking a boat trip.
In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, these types of landscape were very marketable. They showed the everyday world filled with human activity; a world that potential buyers could easily identify with.
