Superintendents living on-site guided gardening to beautify the island. Continuing under the direction of Canal Superintendent J.W. LeBreton Ross, gardeners worked hard to beautify the grounds, including the area surrounding the Superintendent’s Residence. Trees and flowerbeds were planted to mimic an English country garden.
In this photo, the two-story Superintendent’s Residence is set in an expansive lawn scattered with trees. There is a large front porch lined with hanging baskets of flowers. Gardens are situated in front of the porch and extend toward the right.
