Ceia de Emaus

The “Supper at Emmaus” is a good example of the Portuguese Baroque, which is conceived from a triangle composed by the three figures represented: the brightness from the white clothes of one of the figures, the table centre where the bread is and the stream of light to the right of the composition, which contrasts with the dark background and the brownish and reddish tones of Jesus’ clothes. A Portuguese work from the 18th century, with a theatrical and dynamic arrangement of the theme depicted that values both the movement and realism of a sacred theme that the author tries to convey to the faithful, by convincing and imposing admiration.
