The Surbahar is a plucked string instrument, which combines the melodic richness of the Rudra Veena and the playing ease of the Sitar. In its early years, Sitar players played the leisurely Rudra Veena-style movements on the Surbahar, followed by percussion-accompanied lively compositions on the Sitar. The Surbahar now has only a marginal presence as a solo instrument in India, along with an enthusiastic following in Europe and the US.
