An expert artisan in the ancient urushi lacquer technique, Ishizuka studied at the Kyoto City University of Arts and London’s Royal College of Art. He has received a plethora of international awards and his work has been acquired by the Minneapolis Institute of Art and London’s V&A Museum.
Despite its otherworldly allure, this object is embedded in the everyday. Using the kanshitsu technique and naturally-sourced urushi sap as a foundation, consecutive coats of lacquer produce
a glossy allure that emanates both depth and transparency. This interplay between exterior and interior hark back to his inspiration; oranges in
a mesh bag spotted at the supermarket. Using ancient Japanese lacquer techniques from the 7th century and a modern, almost mundane motif, Ishizuka ponders the reciprocity between past and present, freezing the unseen into form.
