Surgery Drill Bit

AnonymousXVIII century

Naval Museum

Naval Museum
Madrid, Spain

This surgical instrument was used to make an entry hole in the cranial cavity. It is linear with a U-shape in the middle and a pointed end. Its shape is similar to that of a carpenter's brace used to drill holes in wood.

As the instrument was somewhat dangerous for surgical use, it was restricted to certain operations, such as for a cranial collapse where there was a risk of death, and fissures, impacts, or shards pressing on the brain.
