The photograph shows Commandant Patrick Pearse surrendering to Brigadier-General Lowe who is accompanied by his staff officer, Major de Courcy-Wheeler, on Saturday, 29 April 1916. The figure obscured by Pearse is Nurse Elizabeth O’Farrell, a member of Cumann na mBan, who had been sent with a Red Cross flag to inform Brigadier-General Lowe that Pearse wished to negotiate surrender terms.
