Oil on board painting of a cricket match in 1839, with spectators lining the boundary and buildings beyond the playing field. A painted inscription in the lower section reads, "SURREY AND KENT PLAYING THE GAME OF CRICKET AT THE OVAL JULY 1839". The viewpoint is from an elevated angle, looking down the wicket and shows the bowler running in. Thirteen players are on the field, wearing white shirts, trousers and dark belts. Six are wearing top hats. There are also two umpires who wear suits with long coats and top hats. A Union Jack is flying next to a two-storey building with a balcony at the edge of the field on which a number of spectators stand. Just beyond is St Matthew's Church, Brixton, built in 1824.
