The Sursingar is a short-lived late 19th century attempt by Afghan Rabab players to enlarge the melodic potential of their instrument. They grafted to the Rabab the bottom of the Surbahar and the top of a Rudra Veena to craft the Sursingar. The Rabab was re-engineered to evolve into the contemporary Sarod, which was much easier to handle, and much more versatile in its idiom. However, the Sursingar became redundant, and is now almost extinct.
