A cross-section, taken along the NW-SE axis, of the site alongside the existing CERN Laboratory where it was proposed to construct the 300 GeV proton synchrotron. The top line follows the contour of the surface; the dotted line follows the contour of the top of the underlying molasse. The extent of the molasse makes possible a machine diameter of 2.2 km.
