Sustento

Evaluating Awilda Rodríguez Lora’s ability to sustain herself through her practice as a choreographer and cultural worker in Puerto Rico, SUSTENTO is a video performance resulting from a collaboration with multidisciplinary artist and director Macha Colón. Reflecting on trauma, fatigue, and exoticization as some of the challenges faced by Black women, Rodríguez Lora problematizes the neo-colonial dynamics that hinder processes of care. The video exposes the conditions of collective production, confronting the performative artistic practice’s lack of sustainability, since it is as costly as it is demanding for the body. The work presents an avatar of the artist who speaks from an imagined future where all beings can exist in their own truth and joy.
